The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched an investigation following a report alleging that Hon. Alexander Ikwegh, who represents Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State, assaulted a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, during a confrontation in Abuja. The incident took place on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama.

According to the preliminary police report, Mr. Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwegh when a dispute broke out regarding the delivery process. During this argument, Mr. Abuwatseya was allegedly slapped by Hon. Ikwegh, escalating the altercation into an incident of reported physical assault.

In a statement, the FCT Police Command expressed concern over Hon. Ikwegh’s alleged conduct and attitude toward law enforcement. Following the alleged slap, the representative reportedly responded to Mr. Abuwatseya’s suggestion to involve police by saying, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” a statement that, according to the police, indicated “a troubling disregard for the authority of law enforcement.”

The Commissioner of Police for the FCT, CP Olatunji Disu, emphasized the importance of a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter. “The Command is committed to ensuring justice in all cases. Upon completion of the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken,” he stated.

The police have confirmed that Hon. Ikwegh is currently at the Maitama Police Station, where he is undergoing questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.

SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer, reiterated the Command’s dedication to upholding justice, underscoring that “no individual, regardless of status, is above the law.”

Further updates on the case are expected following the conclusion of the investigation.
