The Federal Government has ordered a probe into the circumstances that led to the killing of policemen by soldiers in Ibi,Taraba State.
This move was disclosed by the Chief of Air Staff,Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar while briefing the State House Press Corps,after a meeting of the National Security Council in Abuja,Thursday.
According Air Marshal Abubakar, “The council also decided that(on) the unfortunate incident in Taraba State in Ibi, a committee will be set up by defence headquarters to critically look into the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.”
Newsdiaryonline recalls that the Force Headquarters accuses soldiers of killing 3 police operatives and one civilian in Ibi.Others on the police special operation were injured.The police also alleged that the kidnap kingpin its operatives arrested was set free by soldiers after the shooting.
However, the Nigerian Army Headquarters said the troops responded to distress call over suspected kidnapping.It said it was unfortunate that suspected kidnappers turned out to be policemen on duty. Newsdiaryonline reported that the incident was a hallmark of inter-agency fiasco.
Earlier, Air Marshal Abubakar said after the Council’s meeting with President Muhammad Buhari, “this brief is just to acquaint you with the issues discussed during the national security council. The council evaluated the current strategy of managing internal security operations all over the country and we are satisfied with the current efforts.We are making substantial progress in all the areas of conflicts.
He assures “Nigerians that the armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies would continue to work to ensure the security of Nigerians and to also ensure that no individual or group of individuals undermine the territorial integrity of Nigeria.
“That in a nutshell is the outcome of this meeting.”
When he was asked if the council discussed the issue of using technology and drones to fight crimes as government earlier pledged to the South-West leaders, the Chief of Air Staff said, ”technology will continue to play a very critical role in resolving security challenges in Nigeria. He added that “All the services are using one technology or the other in order to ensure that our country is secured. “We are also looking at other areas of technology that are not currently in use to ensure that we put together all that is required to ensure the security of Nigerian and Nigerians”,the air chef said.
