Over N37.5 million has been expended by the Wife of the Niger state Governor, Dr. Amina Sani Bello for free Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) surgeries in the last three years.

Bello who disclosed that 206 women had so far benefitted from the free VVF camp said that it cost an average of N150, 000 to operate and rehabilitate one VVF patient.

Speaking to newsmen in Kontagora before commencing free VVF surgeries for 50 women at the Kontagora General Hospital, the Governor’s Wife said that 117 of the surgeries in collaboration with Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria (IMAN) at the Umar Musa Yaradu Specialist Hospital, Sabon Wuse, 30 at the Umaru Sanda Ndayako General Hospital Bida, 49 at the Kontagora General Hospital and 10 at the Jummai Babangida Women and Children Hospital Minna.
She debunked myths that VVF is caused by early marriage adding that obstructed labour and refusal to deliver in hospitals by women can also cause VVF.
“It can be eradicated if every woman who is pregnant and in labour has skilled people attending to her. Most of the people who have VVF had it because of obstructed or prolonged labour and in such a situation only skilled person will know what to do.”
Bello further said that her Foundation, Raise Foundation does a VVF surgical camp quarterly in a bid to eradicate the scourge of VVF from the society decrying the increasing level of stigmatistion against women suffering from VVF.
