The National Identification Number (NIN) may soon become a requirement for the issuance of the National Drivers Licence (NDL).

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), which issues the licence, said it has received a proposal to this end from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

FRSC spokesman, Mr Bisi Kazeem, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday.

Kazeem said the Director-General of NIMC, Mr Aliyu Aziz, tabled the proposal during a visit to the FRSC Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, in Abuja.

Aziz reportedly sought collaboration between NIMC and FRSC in the area of inclusion of NIN in the biometric data capturing part of the drivers licence registration process.

“The NIMC D-G specifically requested the Corps to make it mandatory for all applicants of the NDL to produce their national identification numbers at the point of registration,” Kazeem said.

The FRSC boss was reported to have said that the proposal would be looked into.

Oyeyemi emphasised the need for the harmonisation of the biometric capturing processes of all relevant agencies in the country in line with global best practices.

He, therefore, urged NIMC to fast track the integration of all agencies involved in biometric capturing, so as to achieve a uniform standard for the nation. (NAN)
