Esther Kolawole of Mountain of Fire Ministries Club has won a gold medal in the 61kg female cadet at the ongoing Gov. Wike National Wrestling Championships.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 61kg was a round robbing format where the five wrestlers fought among themselves for a winner to emerge.
Kolawole defeated all four members in her category by technical superiority which is 10-0.
She fought against Essien Ekanem of Cross Rivers, Nwachukwu Chekwube of Bi-Chizon club, Victory Richard of Bayelsa state and Iveren Tsenongo of Benue state.
The 16 year-old student of St Luis Girls Grammer School, Akure attributed her victory to hard work.
She said that she really prepared for the competition and was glad her hard work yielded good results.
““I put my all into training prior to this competition and I believed in myself. I was focused and determined.
““Also my coach, Purity Akuh, worked so hard on my confidence level and made me believe I can conquer any contender, ” she said.
NAN reports that the maiden edition of Gov. Nyesom Wike National Wrestling Championships started on Sunday with 22 states participating.
The states are Jigawa, Kano, Cross Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Plateau, Ebonyi, Delta, Edo, Niger, Bayelsa, Rivers, Kogi, Osun, Ondo, Anambra, Enugu, Lagos, Bauchi, Ogun, Sokoto, Katsina and Kebbi.
Other participants are the Nigeria Army, Mountain of Fire Ministries Wresting club, the Federal Capital Territory, the Nigeria Navy, the Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corps and the Nigeria Police.
Also competing are Bi-chizon Wrestling Club, Jude Amadi Club, Purity Wrestling Club, Gateway Club, Dynamite Club, Spider Club and Rowpack Club. (NAN)
