In a landmark initiative aimed at empowering the next generation with digital skills, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Federal Ministry of Education (FME) have joined forces to enhance Nigeria’s digital literacy curriculum. This collaboration is a key part of the Federal Government’s vision to prepare Nigerian students for success in an increasingly digital economy.
Speaking at the 68th National Council on Education (NCE) meeting, NITDA Director General Kashifu Inuwa underscored the vital role of education in Nigeria’s digital transformation. “There is no way we can achieve our mandate without partnering with the Ministry of Education. This partnership is essential as it aligns with the Federal Government’s goals to equip citizens with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital economy,” Inuwa said.
The partnership aims to integrate the Digital Literacy Framework (DLF) into Nigeria’s formal education system. This framework, which is part of NITDA’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0), targets 70% digital literacy by 2025 and 95% by 2030. Inuwa explained, “The people component of technology is skills and talent. It is important to upskill Nigeria’s workforce, ensuring that citizens are not only consumers of digital technology but also proficient in creating and utilising these technologies effectively.”
He added, “Technology makes our lives better, but people also make technology better.” With this holistic approach, the partnership seeks to cultivate a generation of tech-savvy individuals who can contribute to the country’s digital economy and national development.
The curriculum is expected to be reviewed and approved by the Council, marking a significant step toward the government’s vision of a digitally literate workforce. Inuwa further noted that NITDA, in collaboration with various stakeholders, including educational institutions and international partners, is committed to building Nigeria’s capacity to innovate and lead in the global digital landscape.
As Nigeria embarks on this transformative journey, the alignment of NITDA’s initiatives with the Ministry of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy’s goals is critical for ensuring the country’s success in the digital age.
