Fresh facts have emerged to the effect that there may be no election in Nigeria in 2015.Instead, President Goodluck Jonathan is believed to be working towards a 2 year extension of his tenure. If the plan succeeds, the president plans to quit 2017.
It is not clear how the president intends to carry out his tenure extension plans but the plot is well known within informed circles.
Newsdiaryonline .com learnt that the plot is also known within diplomatic circles. One diplomatic source said emphatically, we understand there will be no elections in 2015.The president is determined to extend his tenure for two years.
Continuing,a source said this fresh hint is already known by some prominent Nigerian leaders including two former presidents .A prominent leader among federal lawmakers is said to be equally aware of this plot.Newsdiaryonline.com learnt that all the ex leaders and the prominent lawmaker who are aware of this 2017 plot are very unhappy and worried about it.
But there are those who believe elections will hold. They say it may be too dangerous for the president to contemplate an extension of his tenure. In any case, one of these observers argued that it is better for the president to hold the election and have another four years instead of a dangerous ,illegal two year extension.
These hints emerged at a time some northern groups have expressed their resolve to resist any plot to extend Jonathan’s tenure under the cover of security.
Rising from a meeting in Kaduna, the northern groups vowed to ““Reject any excuse to prevent any citizen from participating in the 2015 General Elections.. Similarly any attempt to secure extension of tenure under the cover of security will be resisted by people of the North. Like all Nigerians, Northerners expect the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan to provide a secure and safe environment for the 2015 elections, and avoid any attempt to jeopardise the democratic process in Nigeria.”
A communique by Col. JIP Ubah, (rtd) Secretary General ACF(Arewa Consultative Forum) and Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed ,Secretary General, Code Group gave names the groups at meeting thus:Arewa Consultative Forum;Northern Elders Forum;Code Group;Northern Re-awakening Forum;Arewa Research and Development Project;Northern Union;Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation;Arewa Media Forum ;North East Unity and Development Forum;Northern Youth Coalition and Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria.
