Akwa United Football Club’s under-15 team on Monday in Enugu defeated their Remo Stars FC counterparts 2-1 in the ongoing Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL)/La Liga U15 Promises Tournament.

In the matches of the day at the Enugu centre of the tournament, Akwa United defeated Remo Stars while Bendel Insurance thrashed Abia Warriors 4-0.

Emmanuel Ekemini scored for Akwa United in the 15th minute, while Peter Godwin made it 2-0 just before the break.

Remo Stars took the game to their opponents and got rewarded in the 65th minute of play when Godwin Santos reduced the deficit.

All efforts put into the match by Remo Stars to equalise could not yield anything as Akwa United stood firm.

Speaking after the match, Akwa United’s coach Edward Green said he was happy as they were able to hold off their opponents’ late surge.

“We found it difficult to play, because we are not used to an artificial pitch and all this while we have been training inside the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo which has a grass pitch.

“Even though we won, but we did not have a good game today, because the pitch was too hot for the players.’’

He added that they view all the teams at the Enugu centre as strong and that they respect their opponents.

“Our target is to make it from this centre and probably reach the finals in Lagos. Then anything can happen,’’ the coach said.(NAN)
