Police in India have arrested seven people in connection with Sunday’s boat tragedy in the Southern State of Andhra Pradesh that claimed 22 lives,’’ a Police official said on Friday.

The boat that was overloaded with 38 tourists capsised in the Krishna River in the state’s Vijaywada district, 275 km from capital Hyderabad.

“The seven persons arrested are directors of a river boating and adventure company that operated the tourist boat illegally in the river on that day,’’ the official said.

The arrests came after a preliminary probe suggested that the boat did not have the necessary license to operate in the river.

“The boat’s operator did not have the necessary government permission to ferry people. All the accused have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder,’’ the official said.

Boat tragedies are common in India, mainly because of overloading and scant regard for law.
