As fans continue to lament the dismal performance of Nigerians at the last Lagos International Squash Classics, Seun Peters, a former player, has advocated for regular competition to keep players in form.

Peters, a former President of the Professional Squash Players Association of Nigeria (PSPAN), gave the advice in an interview on Saturday in Lagos.

Egyptian players won the most important categories, while none of the Nigerian players made it to the finals.

“If regular competitions are held, I believe our players have the potential to compete with any player from any part of the world.

“We can see the zeal of the players, what relevant authorities can do is to take the organisation of periodic competitions as priority to sharpen our players’ skills.

“Taking just two players abroad to participate cannot benefit our players, but when we make our competitions so competitive, each player will be training three times better,’’ he said.

Peters said the just-concluded classics which held from March 19 to March 24, was an indication that there hadn’t being a significant improvement in the players’ skills.

“We need to help these players to resuscitate squash, there is a decline, and we need to understand that the result at the classics was a true reflection of the decline in our players’ skills.

“The truth is nothing short of regular competition in all category can help us fix this, I know the federation is doing its best, but there is need for it to try harder. (NAN)
