Members of Nigeria’s national assembly have approved the state of emergency declared by President Goodluck Jonathan in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states .Jonathan declared the emergency rule last week and vowed to seek lawmakers’ endorsement ,of course.
The Senate met first on the matter on Tuesday .The upper legislative chambers later proceeded into a closed door session during which the presidential proclamation was discussed and approved. All the 100 senators present reportedly endorsed the declaration of the state of emergency.
Equally, members of the lower legislative chamber, the House of Representatives also endorsed Jonathan’s state of emergency.
Reports even before Tuesday’s sessions by the lawmakers suggested that President Goodluck Jonathan had consulted with the leadership of the national assembly before making the proclamation last week.
With this endorsement, the federal lawmakers who are renowned for stonewalling Jonathan’s moves(especially on budget matters) ,this time around set politics aside and decided to rally behind the commander- in -chief to save the nation from the Boko Haram sect which has wreaked havoc on the nation.
