Progressive Students’ Movement (PSM), a pan-African socialist movement, has called for urgent establishment of state and local government police to confront growing insecurity in the country.

President of the group in Nigeria, Mr Bestman Okoroafor, made the call in a statement on Monday in Enugu, in reaction to Friday killing of Mrs Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Afenifere Leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti.

According to Okoroafor, PSM is joining forces with other well-meaning bodies and organisations in the agitation for urgent establishment of state and local government police to confront the growing insecurity in the country.

He said: “The attention of the leadership of PSM has been drawn to the recent tragic and gruesome murder of Mrs Funke Olakunrin, daughter of an elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, by suspected herdsmen.

“PSM condoles with Afenifere, Reuben Fasoranti and the Yoruba race over this sad incident.

“PSM is calling on government to as a matter of urgency, double its efforts in tackling insecurity and persistent killings in parts of the country by suspected armed bandits, Boko Haram and herdsmen.’’

Okoroafor called on sponsors of arms banditry to desist from act, saying it was an attempt to sabotage President Muhammadu Buhari’s efforts at tackling insecurity in the country.

He, however, prayed that God should grant the deceased’s family, the Yoruba race and loved ones the fortitude to bear the loss. (NAN)
