Coalition for the Inclusion of Women in Governance is canvassing for the inclusion of more women in decision making and lead processes in the country.
Mrs Felicia Onibon, President of Change Managers International Network, and a member of the group, said that when given opportunities and responsibilities, women would perform better in governance.
Onibon was speaking on the sidelines of a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, organised by the Coalition for the Inclusion of Women in Governance group.
She said the group was asking for 50 per cent of the positions that Federal Government would give out to Nigerians, as that would support and represent the interests of both men and women in the country.
“We know that if he is able to give 50 per cent to women, he will not be disappointed as women are ready to work hard and ensure that the name of Nigeria gets into the League of Nations in a very positive way.
“So we are asking for it, not just for frivolity, but because we know women mean business and they are willing to give whatever it takes to make Nigeria great.
“From what we have seen so far, Nigerian women that have been given the opportunity to lead and rule have done it effectively.
“And if they have done it effectively, there are many more that can join them.
“So we are asking that he retains those that are there and he should also add more women to lead processes in this country,” Onibon said.
Also speaking, Hon. Adaora Onyechere, Executive Director, WEWE Network Africa, also said there were missing gaps in the affirmative action call.
According to Onyechere, there are missing gaps in mentoring women who are older stakeholders in politics and policy making that will be able to groom more women with capacity.
“This will bring about filling those gaps that are needed to go with the structures,’’ she said. (NAN)
