The newly-elected board of the Lagos State Track and Field Association of Nigeria has promised to give priority to training of coaches to update their knowledge.
The 2nd Vice-Chairman of the association, Gani Adenuga, made the pledge, while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.
He stressed the importance of giving regular training to coaches, to make them understand new developments in track and field.
Adenuga noted that the inability of the association’s former board to organise refresher courses had hampered the performance of coaches and athletes.
“We want to assure our members that we are going to live up to expectations; one of our agenda is on coaches’ training and retraining.
“We are giving this issue a priority because it is a fundamental area that had been swept under the carpet.
“This is a new board and we are going to run an open door administration, giving opportunity for ideas and initiatives that will lead to significant growth in the association.’’
Adenuga said that a committee would be set up for aggressive marketing, to secure sponsorship for the body, adding that that would also go a long way in staging grassroots competitions.
According to him, holding regular competitions are important for the monitoring of athletes and coaches.
Adenuga, who is also a grassroots coach with the Lagos State Athletics Association (LSAA) said: “the association will be soliciting for sponsorship to generate funds.
“The target is to get hold of good sponsors and if they are not forthcoming, we will go the extra mile to raise funds to execute our programmes.’’
NAN reports that the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Lagos State Athletics Association and the Track and Field Coaches of Nigeria, held their elections on Oct. 24. (NAN)
