#TrackNigeria: Women’s Situation Room in Nigeria(WSRN), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), on Wednesday held a peaceful rally to enlighten Nigerians on the need for peaceful elections.
The NGO, which comprises various religious groups, emphasised the need for voters, election officials and security agencies to work toward a peaceful conduct of the exercise that would deepen the democratic culture in the country.
Mrs. Nanpang Gowkat, the coordinator of the NGO, said that the rally was aimed at calling on women to sensitise their wards and children to shun all forms of violence and resist the temptation to sell their votes.
Gowkat called on women to vote on election days so as to use their numerical advantage to determine Nigeria’s leaders.
She lamented that women were always at the receiving end during crises, especially when their husbands and children get killed and their properties destroyed.
Mrs. Jennifer Yerima, the chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists(NAWOJ), in Plateau, who received the women after the rally, charged them to desist from selling their votes.
She also advised them to caution their wards against engaging in violence during the elections.
The women held various placards with inscriptions such as “Elections, not war”, “We say no to election violence”, among others. (NAN)
