Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has lauded the efforts of Nigerian soldiers in the fights against insurgency, counter terrorism and enjoined Nigerians to offer their support to them in all forms.
Tambuwal gave the commendation at the closing of 2018 West African Social Activities (WASA) in Sokoto on Saturday.
He said that the army had played great role in containing internal insecurity in different parts of Nigeria which deserved public commendation in order to motivate them.
Represented by Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Suleiman Usman (SAN), the governor said soldiers had assisted in restoring peace at Goronyo, Sabon Birni, Rabah and Tureta Local Government Areas faced with security challenges of cattle rustling, kidnappings and armed robbery in the state.
He reiterated government’s commitment in supporting the army in all areas of its mandates, noting that the state government had supported army in establishment of Army Secondary Schools in Shagari and Sokoto metropolis.
He explained that with the upgrading of the Brigade to Army Division, Sokoto government would partner Nigerian Army to set up a military hospital in the area.
According to him, some buses have already been donated to kick start the processes.
“In view of the importance of army activities on containing external and internal security for nation’s peace and progress, more are needed to be done in supporting them.
“This present sporting and social events will go along way in inculcating brotherliness and interaction within army and communities,’’ he said.
In his address, the Brigade Commander, Brig.-Gen. Linus Udeagbala, said the event was historic to mark the end of successful training year which dates back to the days of West African Frontier Force.
Udeagbala said the event was still used to showcase the rich culture, traditional heritage of the members of Nigerian Army.
He said it was an avenue for leadership to appreciate soldiers performance and offer appraisals to future operations.
The commander lauded the General Commanding Officer, Gen. Mohammed Mohammed, for his support toward successful completion of the training, welfare and other supports that facilitated the accomplishment of the activities.
The event featured diverse cultural display, students’ presentations, Tug of War competition, presentation of prices and souvenir .
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, was represented by District Head of Shuni, Alhaji Muhammad Jabbi.
The other dignitaries were Sokoto State Commissioner for Energy, Alhaji Bello Goronyo, heads of security agencies in Sokoto, women and youth groups, among others, attended the event.(NAN)
