The Grand Rivers Alliance has rejected moves by the Leadership of the Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) to zone its governorship ticket to the Rivers South East Senatorial District, there by shutting out other eligible candidates in the party to contest the gubernatorial election.
In a statement made available to news men in Port Harcourt ,the Director of Communications and strategy of the Grand Rivers Alliance, Comrade Nderigha Ekine said ,it is a breach of the fundamental human rights of eligible contestants from other zones, to be denied the opportunity to aspire.
According to him in a democracy every citizen or party man is equal and important and has the right to aspire to any position, stating that the recent statement from the State Chairman of the APC saying the party is considering giving its gubernatorial ticket to the Rivers South East Senatorial Zone.
He maintained that in the History of Rivers State there was never a time the founding fathers of the state sat and agreed that political positions should be zoned; noting that at every given time the contest has always been thrown open to all.
He insisted that the only way the party can sweep the polls in the 2015 general elections is to allow a level playing field for all contestants to enable the best candidate to emerge.
“The era of sitting down somewhere to anoint candidates, against the wish of the people is over” Comrade Ekine maintained.
