A 30-year-old man, Tochucku Egbo, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly beating up his neighbour with plank.

The defendant, who resides at Pleasure, Oke-Odo, Lagos, was arraigned on a two-count charge of assault and causing grievous harm.

The prosecutor, Insp Emmanuel Ajayi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Jan. 25, at his residence.

He said that the defendant assaulted his co-tenant, Mr Semiu Adebare, by hitting him with plank on the head during an argument over the sharing of electricity bill.

Ajayi said the complainant reported the case to the police, leading to the arrest of the defendant.

He said the offences violated Sections 173 and 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 173 stipulates three years’ imprisonment for assault while Section 245 prescribes seven years for causing grievous harm.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mrs A.S. Odusanya, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

Odusanya said the surety should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The magistrate adjourned the case until Feb. 23, for mention. (NAN)
