Kano state government has committed about $1.2 million in sponsoring 90 indigenes of the state to study health related degrees at Mansoura and 6th October Universities both in Egypt.
The state governor, Gov. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, who disclosed this during when he met with the students in Cairo today, Sunday, explained that the aim is to address the shortage of medical personnel in public hospitals in the State.
He disclosed that 50 out of the 90 students are at the 6th October University, pursuing degrees in medicine, while the remaining 40 are studying for bachelor’s degrees in Nursing and Midwifery at Mansoura University.
Gov. Kwankwaso further pointed out that on completion of their studies, the medical doctors will be deployed to public hospitals in the state, while the nurses and midwifes will be posted to the new School of Nursing, Madobi and the College of Midwifery, Gezawa to teach.
He also revealed that his administration has given out full overseas scholarships to a total of 300 male and female secondary school leavers from the state to study medicine and pharmacy in different universities in Sudan, Egypt, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and India.
“My visit to this place is to physically the assess facilities, the general environment of your universities in addition to your welfare especially so as to justify the investments we are making in your education. I want you to remain steadfast, loyal and determined to excel so as to justify the huge State resources committed for your training,” he also stated.
“I am happy to say that I am satisfied with my personal assessment of your academic progress as a result of my visit. Today I feel more than ever before happy to see our dreams coming to fruition”, he stated.
The governor revealed that the state government has concluded plans to engage some medical doctors from Egypt to work in general hospitals across the state for the general improvement of services in the health sector.
Meanwhile, Governor Kwankwaso had earlier visited the 99 medical students from state that studying in four different universities in Sudan.
While in Sudan he had also paid a courtesy visit on the governor of Khartoum state, Dr. Abdurrahman Al- Khidir, in his office where the host governor praised the Sudanese-Nigerian relations in various fields, pointing out that such visits by the Kano governor will go a long way in cementing the already existing cordial ties between the two countries.
Responding Gov. of Kwankwaso thanked the government of Khartoum state for the hospitality extended to him and his delegation and appreciated the long relationship between Nigeria and Sudan and particularly the relation between Sudan and Kano and hope that it will continue to grow from strength-to-strength.
