The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Akure, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola has challenged Nigerian Universities to move away from faculty-centered and lecture based paradigm to one where learners are the focus of teaching and learning. He said this is in line with the global trend where faculty members become learning environment designers and students are taught critical thinking skills. He was speaking at an event organized by the university to appraise its blended leaning support programme.
According to a statement by According Adegbenro Adebanjo ,Principal Assistant Registrar (PR) FUTA, Professor Daramola urged lecturers to support students by adding to their intellectual growth and by instilling in them the awareness of important social issues and supporting their ability to become more productive members of society as life-long learners working toward common good. Prof. Daramola challenged lecturers to fully embrace the use of ICT in order to equip students and co-learners to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century.
Also speaking at the event, Dr (Mrs.) Funmi Olubode-Sawe, a lecturer in the University’s Department of General Studies noted the importance of incorporating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into teaching, learning and research. She defined Blended Learning as education that combines face-to-face classroom methods with computer mediated activities to form an integrated instructional approach. She recalled that digital materials had served supplementary roles by helping to support face- to- face instruction.
Also speaking on “pedagogy of blended learning”, Dr. Peter Aborisade explained that Digital Game Based learning is a strategic and tactical guide to the newest trend in e-learning, combining content with video games with all information needed to accomplish learning or training objectives.
