The Police Command in Enugu State said Saturday that it had concluded arrangements for a security summit, where political parties and candidates for the upcoming general elections would jointly sign a peace accord.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, stated this in a release made available in Enugu.
Amaraizu said that the summit, which was being organised by the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Danmallam, would take place on Wednesday, Jan. 9.
He said that the event would involve chairmen of all the registered political parties, their candidates and traditional rulers in the state.
He also said that the heads of other sister-agencies in the state, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), executive members of the state Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and the media had been invited to the event.
“The summit will present a veritable platform for all and sundry to contribute their ideas toward charting the way for a successful and hitch-free general elections in the state,’’ the PPRO said.
He urged political parties, their candidates and supporters to always play the game according to the rule.
He further admonished them to eschew acts of rancour, bitterness and violence that could threaten the prevailing peace in the state.
Amaraizu said, “The command is warning against ignoble acts, including the wanton destruction and mutilation of campaign posters and billboards, amongst others.”
He charged the politicians to remain law-abiding before, during and after the polls, saying, “Any one caught engaging in acts capable of disrupting the peace in the state will be made to face the full weight of the law.” With reports by NAN
