The Nigerian Union of Journalists FCT, (Abuja) Council has congratulated the newly elected Executive members of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE led by the Deputy Managing director of The Sun publishing company, Mr. Femi Adesina, for their hard won election.
In a press statement signed by the Chairman of the NUJ FCT (Abuja) Council, comrade Chuks Ehirim, the Union stated that the NGE election is worthy of commendation especially with the caliber of persons who have emerged to lead the group for the next two years.
Ehirim added that the NGE election could be favourably compared to NUJ Abuja Council election, of 7 July, 2012, which was a pan Nigerian exercise that was devoid of rancour.
He urged the new leadership of NGE to reposition the association for the ongoing struggle for the enthronement of genuine democracy in Nigeria, stating that journalists have been in the forefront of the crusade for a credible, free and fair electoral system in Nigeria.
He regrets however that the situation over the years has shown that we have not gotten to the promised land and therefore he uses this opportunity to appeal to every Nigerian journalist most especially the leadership and members of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, to redouble their efforts in the current effort to ensure that the country gets an electoral system where the votes of the people counts and not the one where people occupy elective offices without the genuine mandate of the electorate.
