The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has issued a warning regarding a fraudulent message circulating online, in which certain individuals are allegedly contacting students directly through the University’s portal, displaying their academic status, and demanding payment to resolve outstanding carryover courses.
In a press release, NOUN’s Management clarified that it has not authorized any individual or entity to request payments from students for clearing carryover courses. A purported chat exchange between the University and an affected student was reportedly shown to NOUN officials, but they dismissed the request as fake, describing it as a scam designed to deceive students.
“The University has not experienced any hacking of its portal and has not requested any payments related to carryover courses,” stated Ibrahim Sheme, NOUN’s Director of Media and Publicity. “This request is the work of unscrupulous individuals attempting to defraud our students.”
NOUN reassures students that the University’s portal remains secure, with additional measures in place to prevent unauthorized access. The University urges students to ignore such messages and to report any suspicious requests to their Study Centre for prompt action.
The statement concludes with a reminder to students to remain vigilant and to rely on official University communications for any information regarding their academic records and requirements.
