The protest against impeachment of Al makura which began on Wednesday intensified on Thursday as more groups joined the fray and marched toward the palace of the emir of Lafia
Protesters reportedly urged the lawmakers to allow the governor who was democratically elected to carry on with his duties. They urged the State House of Assembly not to allow themselves to be influenced by external forces.
The emir of Lafia ,Dr Mustapha Agwai who addressed the protesters called for calm. There were also hints that traditional rulers have offered to intervened in the crisis.
But the lawmakers were said to have defied the protests and proceeded to serve the governor with the impeachment notice through substituted means.
The plot to impeach Almakura gathered steam on the heels of the impeachment of Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako.
On Wednsday, opposition All Progressives Congress,APC vowed to resist the unfolding gale of impeachment which the party’s national chairman Chief John Odigie Oyegun who addressed the press blamed on President Goodluck Jonathan’s desperation over 2015 election.
Like Nyako,Al makura is an APC governor. But the Nasarawa impeachment appears to have taken as slightly different turn as the kind of resistance already mounted against the plot in Lafia was not displayed for Nyako.
How far the people’s pressure will go in changing the minds of Nasarawa state lawmakers remains to be seen.
