The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, has emphasized the importance of teamwork and transparency in addressing the challenges facing Nigeria.
Speaking at a gathering that marked his assumption of office, that included top officials, agency heads, and the press, Yilwatda expressed gratitude for the warm reception extended to him, stating that the positive environment demonstrated the collaborative spirit within the ministry.
He acknowledged the pressing national issues and called for a unified approach to solve them, highlighting that his mission is not to perform miracles but to work as part of a family toward creating sustainable solutions. “We have challenges that we, as a nation, must recognize, identify, and address together for the sake of ourselves and our future,” Yilwatda said.
Drawing from his long-standing experience in public service, Yilwatda assured the gathering that he is well acquainted with the workings of the civil service, having served as a director for over 12 years before his recent appointment.
He emphasized that his leadership will focus on collaboration and maintaining the integrity of established roles and processes, allowing every member of the ministry to function within their assigned duties.
Yilwatda also touched on the ministry’s public perception, acknowledging a “trust deficit” between the ministry, the public, and the international community.
He stressed the need to rebuild trust through greater transparency and automation of processes, which would give visibility to the ministry’s activities and encourage both local and international partnerships.
Addressing government reforms, Yilwatda urged that policies be implemented with a human touch, ensuring that the effects of necessary reforms do not disproportionately impact those at the grassroots and on the lower rungs of the social ladder.
He expressed confidence that with collaboration and a commitment to transparency, the ministry could make significant strides in the remaining time.
The Minister expressed his appreciation for the support he has received and called on the staff and management to continue fostering a cooperative working environment. “I look forward to working with you, sharing ideas, and contributing to a way forward for the ministry,” he concluded.
Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, Minister of State, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, pledged to restore public trust in the ministry, emphasizing the need for cooperation and teamwork among staff.
Dr. Sununu highlighted the importance of redeeming the ministry’s image as key to ensuring its impact is recognized and appreciated by Nigerians.
“We must work together to avoid any avoidable infractions, as it is only through unity that the mission and vision of Mr. President—eradicating poverty and providing effective humanitarian services—will be realized,” Sununu said. He acknowledged the ministry’s technocrats and professionals as the custodians of institutional knowledge, calling on them for their maximum input and cooperation.
The minister also emphasized the use of technology in achieving the ministry’s objectives. Sununu expressed confidence in his colleague, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, noting his achievements in ICT as an essential tool to reach all Nigerians. “We are good to go, and we assure you of our respect and open-door policy as we march forward together,” he added.
Dr. Sununu concluded by thanking staff for the warm reception given to him and his colleague, assuring them of their readiness to work for the betterment of the country.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Abel Enitan, congratulated the ministers, emphasizing the importance of their leadership at this pivotal time for Nigeria.
Enitan expressed optimism that the ministry is set to address critical socio-economic challenges in the nation, as the newly appointed ministers take the helm.
“Your appointment comes at a crucial moment, as the country grapples with socio-economic challenges,” Enitan said. He noted that the ministry’s work aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at providing relief to citizens, particularly those most affected by the current economic conditions.
Enitan acknowledged the ministry’s troubled past, citing systemic issues that had damaged its reputation. “Conscious efforts have been made in the last ten months to establish a stronger culture of transparency and accountability,” he explained, adding that these reforms are now becoming standard practice within the ministry.
He assured the ministers of the staff’s full support in driving further change. “Together, we will strengthen our systems, foster innovation, and ensure that every Nigerian feels the impact of our efforts. The road ahead may be challenging, but with collaboration, dedication, and a shared vision, we will overcome and build a brighter future for our nation,” Enitan concluded.
