The Chairman Adamawa state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Rv. Fr. Moses Taparki has decried the incursion of politicians into the religious body saying almost 90 percent of the problems bedeviling the state chapter was politically motivated.
Taparki made the disclosure during a press briefing which took place at NUJ Secretariat in Yola yesterday.
He called on Christians in Adamawa state to disregard any directive or invitation in the state that might come from any individual or groups other than the elected state can under his leadership.
When he was asked to comment on the mediatory role being played by the Deputy Governor of the state being the most senior Christian political office holder in the state he said he does not want to comment adding that history posterity will judge his commitment at resolving the crisis.
“I don’t want to be too critical or too personal, we know the Deputy Governor was the highest political office holder in the government, may be he has tried his best as a Christian, but whether his best was enough or not we will live that to posterity to judge,” he said.
Taparki said that the genesis of the crisis lies with the ego of some national exco members of CAN who are not Adamawa indigenes but want to impose their will on the collective sensibilities of Adamawa Christians “Adamawa Christians will resist such unGodly antics.”
He specifically decried the destabilizing role being played by the national secretary of CAN Dr. Moses Asake whom he said was behind the crisis rocking Adamawa state chapter for selfish reasons, saying that Asake can never attempt to do that in Kaduna his hometown as the consequences will be grave.
“.. If any group or person from Kaduna think they can impose people to experiment illegality and impunity, Adamawa Christians would resist them,” he said.
To buttress the impunity being meted to the them, Taparki said prior to the illegal dissolution of the state exco, they have not committed any offense to warrant any query by the national headquarters equating what was happening to a palace coup.
“If I should, describe what is happening in Adamawa CAN I will liken it with what military described as palace coup,” he said.
Taparki however commended the state government and the security agencies, Nigerians and the international community for the uncommon solidarity and collective goodwill demonstrated in confronting the security challenges paused by the activities of insurgents.
