The College of Medicine, University of Nigeria ,UNN has concluded plans to organize a fund raising event in March this year, with the target of garnering N6billion for the purpose of developing the infrastructural facilities at its permanent site, Utuku Ozala, Enugu State.
To this effect, the school is packaging an Alumni Homecoming event which will involve a series of activities aimed at acquainting the alumni, as well as members of the public, with the current situation of things in the school.
According to a statement from the office of the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee of the event, Professor Ifeoma Okoye, the programme of events for the Alumni Homecoming, will kick off on Thursday, March 6,with -Arrival/Class Meeting/Cock tail.
Friday 7th -Opening Ceremony/Lecture/Alumni Forum (Fund raising & inauguration
Of College projects).
The statement added that the opening ceremony is to be chaired by a well known philanthropist and business mogul, Dr. A.B.C. Orjiakor, while the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Governor Godswill Akpabio, will be the Guest Lecturer.
The activities will continue on Saturday March 8th, with a Fitness walk from University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC) to Okpara Square, while Inspection of on-going projects/Sight-seeing/Dinner will follow
On Sunday March 9, there will be Thanksgiving service at Cathedral Church of the Good Shepherd, Independence Layout.
Professor Okoye also lamented that “Years ago, the college started the process of establishing presence at our permanent site at Ituku Ozalla. The progress has been slow, due mostly to funding unavailability, even for Capital projects. The situation is such that our students are being trained/nurtured/administered in a deplorable environment that simulates almost ‘A Refugee Camp” – for only a skeleton of buildings, sparsely furnished, are currently available”.
She added that “ the Homecoming Event is slated to ‘ kick start’ a 6 Billion Naira Endowment Fund, to assist with getting The College established at our ‘Land of Canaan’”
Meanwhile the College has appealed to public spirited individuals in the country to come to the assistance of the College so as to make the event a success.
