APC 600All Progressives Congress (APC) has challenged Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi and National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh to accept responsibility for the Uke adoration tragedy which claimed the lives of at least 28 people and injured scores of others.
APC threw the challenge in statement through its South-East Zonal Publicity Secretary, Osita Okechukwu, on Monday.
The party commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives and the injured of Ukeh tragedy and urged them to accept its heart felt condolences and take solace that their beloved died in the house of God Almighty.
APC however expressed outrage that instead of being remorseful and apologetic, Governor Obi and Chief Umeh are playing blame games with lives of innocent citizens.
The statement reads in part: “We are challenging His Excellency the Governor of Anambra State, Governor Peter Obi and the National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance, Chief Victor Umeh, to candidly apologize to the families of the bereaved and the good people of Anambra State for their political desperado, hence extension of their campaign to the holy adoration ground.
“We are outraged that instead of being remorseful and apologetic, Governor Obi and Chief Umeh are playing blame games with lives of innocent citizens.
“We are also alarmed with Chief Umeh’s call for Senator Ngige’s arrest. We detest the Do-or-Die posture Chief Umeh is adopting in the campaign. Our understanding is that adoration ground is for spiritual uplifting, renewal, meditation and communion with God. Also our findings showed that Peter Obi in his previous attendance never gave a speech in the adoration ground” APC said.
“Governor Peter Obi we know is a well-bred Catholic and humble person, who never offered to make speech in such holy gathering.
“Adoration ground is not a wedding service. Therefore if not for political desperado what necessitated Governor Obi’s campaign speech at the adoration ground?”
Consequently, APC demanded for an unreserved apology from Governor Obi and Chief Victor Umeh which would calm the frayed nerves of the bereaved and the good people of Anambra State and not the blame game.
But Obi has said a panel will be set up to unravel the cause of the stampede. The governor pointedly accused supporters of APC’s Chris Ngige of campaigning at the event which later turned tragic.
