Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo has called on the residents in the state and Nigerians as a whole to embrace peace as 2019 General Elections draw closer.

Okorocha made the call in Owerri at the `Finger off the Trigger’ Campaign, a peace initiative organisation started the South East Campaign for Security, Peace and stability toward the 2019 elections.

The Programme Director of Finger Off the Trigger, Mr Ibrahim Ochigbo, said this in a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja

Okorocha made the call when the `Finger Off the Trigger’ team led by its National Coordinator, Amb. Chielo Ojirika, paid a courtesy visit to the governor in Owerri.

Okorocha, who received the team warmly and endorsed the campaign urged Nigerians to ensure violent free election in the forthcoming general elections.

The governor lauded the initiative and called on all residents in Imo and Nigerians to embrace the campaign.

He said that the campaign was timely given the need to have a peaceful and violence free election across the state.

The National Coordinator, a Nigerian Music Ambassador to Germany, Ojirika also known as Chiboy, the Black Courage commended the governor’s efforts and his commitments toward a violence free election.

“Finger off the Trigger’ is a security and crime prevention training and sensitisation programme that tends to curb violence, especially gun violence in Nigeria.

“It aims to change the mindset of our youths for the better and encourage them to get their fingers off the trigger for a peaceful 2019 elections and beyond.

“It is a non-partisan campaign organised by Salute Nigeria Initiative, supported by the State House, Abuja, and in partnership with the Nigerian Union of Journalists; Nigerian Police Force, National Orientation Agency, Dream Projects, INEC among other,” he said.

Ojirika expressed joy as the South East Campaign is taking off on a very good note.

He noted that candidates and major stakeholders were adopting Finger Off the Trigger campaign in genuine efforts to have a peaceful 2019 elections and beyond.

The coordinator who called on Nigerian youths to shun violence during the elections, urged the security agencies to be on top of their games during the elections.

He also appealed to Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) to be courageous in organising and ensuring a free, fair and credible election.

Ojirika called on all media outfits to embrace balance reporting while calling on responsible social media reportage.

He enjoined all candidates, other major stakeholders and the general public to embrace the clarion call for peace and national unity as the team continues its campaign across the nation. (NAN)
