Workers on routine polio immunization exercise in Kerawa and Gwada Communities of Igabi and Giwa Local Governments Area respectively of Kaduna State met a brickwall as some youths stopped them from carrying out the exercise.The youths in The communities rejected the exercise and chased the immunizers away, destroying all the vaccines in their possession as well as their kits. Hinged on the fact that no developmental project in their communities.
The youth said henceforth no polio immunization would be carried out until the state government executes developmental project in the area. The youth then called on Kaduna State Government to quickly provide their community with developmental projects, otherwise ,no immunization exercise will ever be allowed in their community.
Reacting to the incident spokesman on the Kaduna State Primary health Care Agency, Malam Hamza Ikara appealed to the two Communities to change their attitude and allow their children to be immunized.He said the routine immunization is aimed at ensuring the good health of their children among others.
Also speaking the Head of World Health Organization (WHO), Kaduna office, Dr Furaira Zakari described the incident as unfortunate and called on the parents to always allow their children to be immunized for the overall development of their children.
In an effort toward ensuring that children were properly immunized, a state based polio enlightenment Group, Journalist Against Polio (JAP) in collaboration with World Health Organisation (WHO) organized local drama in four non Compliant areas namely:- Rigasa in Igabi, Tudun Nupawa in Kaduna South, Kasuwar Mata in Zaria and Malali Village in Kaduna North.Before the chasing away of polio workers in these above named ( two) communities, the exercise was successful in other areas where several children were actually immunized.
