As the count down to the Peoples Democratic Party[PDP] mini national convention begins, there is speculation that moves to manipulate the system in favour of some anointed candidates to occupy strategic positions in the party’s national excutive, have suffered some set back.
Some women had besieged the PDP National secretariat, WADATA PLAZA, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, Thursday, to protest against any move to impose any candidate on the delegates to the Mini-Convention which holds on Saturday.
It was gathered that some of the candidates have been told to step down for others who are favoured by the powers that be within the party. This move, sources said, did not go down well with some of the candidates as well as many PDP members who have vowed to resist it.
The women who protested at the PDP headquarters were said to have expressed resentment against decision by powerful PDP leaders to zone the positions of Woman Leader and National Publicity Secretary, to former Transport and Aviation Minister, Dr Kema Chikwe and Barrister Olisa Metu, respectively. The protesters openly called for transparent convention where the delegates would be allowed to cast their votes for candidates of their choice.
Meanwhile, PDP women from Imo State have decleared their support for Dr Bety Nnadi who is in the race for the position of National Woman Leader. Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the party’s Woman Leader in Orlu Senatorial Zone of the state, Mrs Ngozi Ihemdi, said that the support her members are giving to Nnadi is based on her track record as an achiever.
“As the leader of Imo –West PDP, I am assuring you that this time around, we are going to be very meticulous in our choice. We will vote wisely and our wise votes will go to Dr Betty Nnadi, for so many reasons, among them are that you can see that she is a mother and a mother to the core”, she said.
Ihemdi added that“She has that motherly love, her love, tenderly care, speaks volumes of her personality. She is a great mobilizer as you saw when she went to submit her form for the position of National Woman Leader of our great party, the PDP.
“She mobilized almost the whole Imo women and we are all solidly behind her . We will give her our support and loyalty. We know that she will be a strong voice of the women folk at the PDP’s National leadership.
“She is tested and trusted, she has a very big antecedent in the party. She is achievement-oriented, she is honest, she is hardworking, she is action because she believes that action speaks louder than words.
“So with all these put together, we know she will carry people along in the scheme of things and give them sense of belonging and you know that politics is a game of numbers. The raw material for politics are human beings and when you carry these people along, give them sense of belonging, they will believe in you and you will achieve the main goal, for that particular position .
“So that is why we all are solidly behind her and we know that she is not going to disappoint us. She will make a strong voice and she will represent women effectively at that position”.
