PDP-led govts performing better than others-Maku

Labaran-Maku 600Information Minister Mr. Labaran Maku says Peoples Democratic Party-led governments are performing far better than any government under the control of the opposition parties in terms of policies and projects delivery. He made the remarks in Abuja when the National Advisory Council of PDP Project Reloaded under the chairmanship of former Deputy Senate President Ibrahim Mantu paid him a courtesy call.
Mr. Maku said he observed carefully during the recent National Good Governance Tour of Federal and States projects across the country that states under PDP are doing exceedingly well as against performance of the opposition states which are mainly on the pages of newspapers.
He said “we are busy running down this party at a time the party is doing much better than any party today with all the noise that was made about Lagos, I have not seen any other thing being advertised, and why Lagos? Lagos receives most of its revenue from Federal Government investment. Lagos generates about N32 billion every month; about N20 to N22 billion from taxes collected at seaport, airport and all the infrastructure that we have created in Lagos and then revenue allocation of about N7 to N8 billion which makes almost N30 – N32 billion per month. So why can’t we have miracle in another state and even then, Lagos is the most indebted state in the country today with all the revenues that it has collected”.
Mr. Maku was concerned that despite the successes recorded by the PDP at all levels, instead of applauding and supporting the party, some members were castigating the party for personal political ambitions.
While chronicling the achievements of the Federal Government, Mr. Maku mentioned the reforms introduced by the present administration in the power sector, which opened up the sector and attracted private investment to generate and stabilise power supply in the country in addition to constructing 10 new power plants as well as the ground-breaking of Zungeru Hydro-electric Project, which was on the drawing board since the first republic.
The Minister said within three years, President Jonathan turned Nigeria’s “struggling economy into a high GDP growth of 7% consistently for three years now, the highest economic growth in Africa, over and above South Africa and Egypt”.
He remarked that under the PDP government, the country witnessed stability in exchange rate and had grown the nation’s foreign reserve from about $33 billion to between $45 and $48 billion in three years as well as the rebound of the capital market, which crashed before the advent of this administration. Mr. Maku said in spite of the current security challenges, Nigeria remains the preferred destination for Foreign Direct Investment in Africa.
The Minister noted that under the Agricultural Transformation Agenda, Nigerian farmers harvested 1.7 million metric tonnes of rice last year through comprehensive reforms in agriculture that equally opened up the value chains for private investment through the establishment of rice mills, fruits, vegetable and cassava processing plants as well as fertilizer processing plants across the country.
Mr. Maku said the reconstruction of airports across the country had enhanced the image of the country by the provision of world-class aviation services.
The Minister therefore urged members of the PDP to close ranks and unite behind the current leadership of the party with a view to propagating the successes of the party at all levels. “We need to really re-engineer this party because you can’t be performing and then you are not talking about it. Like the Sardauna said when he was launching the New Nigeria in 1966, if you don’t blow your trumpet everybody is busy blowing their own”, he said.
Speaking earlier the Chairman, National Advisory Council of the PDP Project Reloaded, Senator Ibrahim Mantu said the group is a public enlightenment vehicle to showcase the achievements of PDP government at all levels of governance.
He said “both the party and the nation at large are witness to the unprecedented transformational stride of the current PDP administration, which your ministry regularly puts in perspective through ingenious policies and programmes. It is no doubt, to the credit of our great party that we have passionate minister who toils day and night to ensure that the people of Nigeria enjoy to the fullest their right to know goings-on in government”.
Other members of the National Advisory Council of the PDP Project Re-loaded at the courtesy call included former FCT Minister Engr. Abba Gana, former Minister of Aviation Mr. Omotoba and former Speaker of Benue State House of Assembly, Margret Icheen.
