Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State has raised alarm over threat to his life in the face of the desperate attempts against him “at the federal level” .
Reacting to his sudden suspension from the party the governor said , “The way these people at the federal level are desperate, they may come after my life; so when you pray, remember to pray for me to remain alive. Now, you see political witch-hunt. It is so ridiculous; my party must rise above political witch-hunt,”
Earlier,Mrs Ibim Semenitari,Rivers State commissioner for information and communication in her reaction to Amaechi’s suspension said “ We are concerned as we believe this is political witch hunt .It is worrisome .The reason given is the suspension of the Obio Akpor council. This is purely a legislative matter and done in accordance to the laws of local government councils in Rivers State.”
Amaechi himself later asked :“Who has power to suspend Obio/Akpor council? The governor did not suspend Obio/Akpor council, I hope you know. My power is to dissolve and remit it to the House of Assembly, but I have not done that yet. What the Assembly has said is ‘we are investigating corruption’. Then the party says we should not investigate corruption. Is that fair?”
PDP had suspended Amaechi yesterday. The party also set up an 11-man committee to investigate alleged activities of the governor.
Amaechi’s troubles worsened after he won his re-election bid last Friday as Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum. He defeated Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State,a development the presidency and the party are unhappy about. The presidency has however denied involvement in the NGF election.
