Former Governor of Abia State and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has called for the quick resolution of the crisis facing the party.
Kalu said the splitting of the party into factions following Saturday’s Special National Convention needed to be handled with utmost care so that the prediction of those who said the party will implode before 2015 does not come true.
Kalu, in a statement by his Special Adviser, Oyekunle Oyewumi, said the two sides to the conflict should quickly find a common ground to resolve their differences.
The statement quoted Kalu as saying: “Both former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Dr. Bamanga Tukur as seasoned politicians, no doubt, have what it takes to resolve political differences.
“It is in the interest of the party and Nigerians for this to be sorted out as quickly as possible considering the fact that the party is in government at the federal level and in most states of the federation.
“A house divided against itself will, obviously, not stand.
“And it is not in our interest both as founders and joiners for us not to bring down the house we laboured very hard to build.”
Kalu equally called on all stakeholders in the party, especially former and serving members of the Board of Trustees, the National Working Committee and the National Executive Council, to intervene urgently before the crisis spirals out of control.
Kalu’s advice came on the heels of efforts were being made to reconcile the party after the dramatic formation of a new faction on Saturday.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo met with President Jonathan in Abuja. They met behind closed doors but no statement was issued afterwards.
