Vice President ,Arc Mohammed Namadi Sambo has assured of a free and fair election in the forth-coming Ondo State Gubernatorial election where it would be “one man one vote, One woman one vote and one youth one vote”The Vice President made this assurance at the flag off of the PDP Gubernatorial rally in Akure while presenting the gubernatorial candidate of the Party Olusola Oke.
Arc Sambo, who is the Chairman of the National Campaign Committee of the PDP Candidate in Ondo promised the provision of adequate security to ensure the conduct of a free, fair and peaceful election devoid of rancour come 20th October when the election would be held.
Earlier, the vice president called at the Palace of the Deji of Akure HRH Oba Adegbiyi Adesida to pay his traditional homage.While at the palace, Arc Sambo intimated the royal father of the adequate security arrangement been put in place for the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state. The Vice president assured that, in line with the administration’s respect for democratic tenets, the election scheduled to hold on 20th October would be free, fair and peaceful just as the concluded Edo State gubernatorial election.
The vice president also took time to intimate the Deji ruler of Akure land of the various inroads Jonathan’s administration has made in the areas of youth employment and the provision of social infrastructure.
Arc Sambo stated that, in line with the administration’s Transformation Agenda, it is committed to revamping the power sector, which was a key to socio-economic development of the nation. He stated that on their assumption of office, they had been able to increase power generation from the 2,000 mw which they met to over 4,300 mw presently. With the 10 new thermal power plants that have either been completed or in the completion process, power generation has leapt and more power was being generated. The construction of new 330/132 kva Transmission Lines and additional injection substations being built across the federation would ensure adequate transmission and distribution of power. In addition the vice president stated that new hydro power plants in Mambila and Zungeru were also being built to add to the existing ones.
On transportation, Arc Sambo stated that the Federal Government was constructing 2,000km of roads, rehabilitating rail lines across the federation, dredging of the River Niger as well as construction of new deep seaports.
On youth unemployment, the vice president stated that the YouWin programme of the administration was aimed at generating mass employment and would employ 350,000 youths every year in public works. This was in addition to other economic empowerment programmes of Jonathan’s administration as well as its commitment to the fight against corruption in the country. Said Sambo Arc Sambo, while at the seven centuries old ancient palace regarded as a national monument and an architectural masterpiece, stated that due to the prominence of our traditional institutions and the esteem, which this administration places on them, it has written to the legislature and the executive on the need to put our royal fathers on the right position in the amended constitution to contribute their quota to national development.
The vice president prayed for peace and prosperity of the nation and a free and fair election while noting that the gubernatorial candidate of the party in the state was a man of peace and one who has been on the side of the rule of law and would abide by the rules of the party based on free, fair and peaceful elections.
The Deji of Akure, Oba adegbiyi Adesida, on his part, thanked the vice president’s delegation for making the palace their first place of call, which, he said, was a demonstration of the high respect the administration places on traditional institutions. The royal father made a call on the need to give the traditional rulers a definitive role in the constitution and also appealed to the federal government to ensure a free and fair election as was done in Edo state.
Those on the vice president’s entourage were the PDP National chairman Bamanga Tukur, the PDP national Secretary Olagunsoye Oyinlola, the PDP Gubernatorial Candidate Olusola Oke and the Minister of Police Affairs Caleb Olubolade amongst others.
