Odimegwu ‘Resigns’ as National Population Commission Chairman



festus-odimegwuReports Thursday evening said Mr Festus Odimegwu has resigned from his position after a controversial stint. Mr Sam Nwaobasi, the Special Assistant (Media) to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said in a statement that President Goodluck Jonathan has accepted his resignation.
The statement also said Dr Sam Ahaiwe, the Commissioner Representing Abia on the commission will assumed duty as the acting chairman
“His Excellency, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, President, has accepted the resignation of Eze Festus Odimegwu as Chairman of the National Population Commission with effect from Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013,’’ Nwaobasi said.
Odimegwu has been in the eye of the stom since he began casting doubts about the last census. H was accused of passing comments without studying the fact.There were also claims that he had commenced the process of tampering with the census data,a move critics said was dangerous in a combustible country like Nigeria.
Reports said the presidency had earlier queried Odimegwu on the heels of some of his remarks which attracted criticisms from highly placed Nigerians including Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.
