The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara Command, has arrested a suspected internet fraudster, Mr Charles Gabriel, for withdrawing money from people’s bank accounts after stealing their phones.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Command Spokesman, Mr Babawale Afolabi, on Tuesday in Ilorin.
Afolabi said that the 37-year-old suspect, also known as Pastor, was picked up by a team of NSCDC detective at his hideout, located in Offa road, Ilorin.
“On October 26, our Intelligence and Investigations Department received a missing phone complaint from one Buraimoh Sunmonu Adebayo, 57, of No 207, Lagos Road, Sawmill Area, Ilorin
“The complainant said that he lost his phone when he boarded a tricycle from Ilorin Grammar School to Taiwo road.
“Adebayo realised that his phone was missing when he got to his destination and after few hours of losing his phone, a sum of N500,000 was withdrawn from his account.
“The money was from both his personal account and company account, where he is one of the signatories,” Afolabi said.
The spokesman said that the detective and tactical team swung into action and was able to track down the suspect to their hideout on Offa road, Ilorin.
He said that the suspect and his accomplices were arrested and in his confessional statement, admitted to be a notorious internet fraudster and confessed to have stolen the complainant’s phone.
“He stated that he has only withdrawn N400,000 from two bank accounts of the complainant and not N500,000 as being claimed by the complainant,” he said.
The spokesman said that other accomplices picked up at their hideout were Alfred Adegoke, 34, and Yusuf Salman, 30.
He said that 13 mobile phones and some hard drug substances were recovered from the suspects’ hideout.
However, NSCDC state Commandant, Iskilu Makinde, has ordered full-scale investigations into the matter and said that the suspects would be charged to court after the completion of investigations. (NAN)
