Northern Govs urge FG to intensify action against insurgents

Northern Governors forum (NGF) concluded its one day meeting in Kaduna Monday with an appeal to the federal government to take the issue of insecurity more seriously.
The communique which was signed by Governor Babangida Aliyu,chairman of the Forum said that the security situation in North- East should be seen as national concern to avert its spread to other parts of the country, in view of the threat by the insurgents.

” The forum called on the FG to deploy more security personnel with superior military equipment as well as adopt measures to boost their morale to enable them effectively fight the insurgents and other threats to security in the region.

” The forum called on the FG to secure the country’s porous borders by restricting trans-border movements especially in North-East states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.

” The forum appealed to FG to implement all past reports on security challenges in the country. The forum appealed to the FG on the need to provide urgent and adequate funds to Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states afflicted with insurgencies in order to properly address related issues.

“Concerted efforts be put in place by all member states to further ameliorate the fast growing security challenges being posed by cattle restlers/ rearers and the proliferation of Armed Banditry in most parts of the Northern states.

” Furthermore, the forum called on the Federal Government to consider national policy to settle Nomads and providing adequate grazing reserves and cattle routes. To adopt a common approach towards combating insurgency in the north by down playing political differences and work towards a common goal.

” Improving on interlligence gathering and vigorously pursuing employment and youth Empowerment programmes by northern states governors as a way of taking idles youths off our streets.

On Sardauna foundation, the forum directed the foundation to establish improved communication and relationship with the offices of the secretaries to the Governments in various states for effective and efficient discharged of its programmes in member states.

” To articulate tangible projects such as learning institutions in addition to its current efforts at social and intangible interventions that should be brought to the attention of the forum for support.

Also on New Nigeria Development Company ( NNDC) ,the forum noted that NNDC must be refocused strategically to address critical issues affecting the north, particularly human capital deficit, economic regeneration and infrastructural deficits.

Equally on the National Conference, the forum resolved to nominate the best brains from the north with a united agenda to represent it at the forthcoming conference.

The forum also deliberated on the Almajiri phenomenon,during which it Commended the efforts of Kano state government towards banning the almajiri activities on the streets and encouraged other states to follow suit.

The governors also frowned at the continued collection of multiple taxation being imposed by various states on the highways on agric produce and cattle. It therefore called on such states to obey the High court judgment on taxes on agricultural produce on the highways.
