Nigerian women under the auspices of the National Council of Women Societies [NCWS-Nigeria], the umbrella organization for all women associations in the country, staged a peaceful protest march from their Headquarters in Area 11, Garki Abuja to the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) complex in the neighbourhood and t the National Centre for Women Development (NWD), to push for a quick end to the 4-month-old nation-wide strike by university teachers.
Bearing placards of different coulours and sizes, with different messages, the import of which was a plea to the striking lecturers to yield some ground and go back to work, in the interest of the future of Nigerian youths. They argued that young Nigerian men and women were currently thrown out on the streets, plying the many Cyber Cafes or being tempted into prostitution or taking to crime, to occupy themselves and to survive. The women said they were tired of the unending strikes in Nigerian tertiary institutions, which has made young people graduate into grandmothers and grandfathers.
National President of the NCWS who led the march, told her members and other women groups represented, that they were out on a peaceful march, to press home their earlier plea to ASUU members whom she described as their “husbands and brothers,” to “consider and accept the concession the Federal Government has made so far, and go back to work while negotiation continue.”
The women, who say they are all out for peace in Nigeria, are also planning an interdenominational and inter-religious Prayer Session of three hours in Abuja next week Wednesday 23 October 2013.
