NGO calls for performance evaluation of national disability commission

The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD), an NGO, has called for a performance evaluation of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWDs) in the discharge of its responsibilities.

Mr David Anyaele, the Executive Director of CCD, made the call on Sunday in a statement to commemorate the third Anniversary of the passage of the National Disability Act.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Act 2018 was assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari on Jan. 17, 2019.

Anyaele also called for the performance assessment of the legislation in safeguarding the rights and dignity of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) since its passage.

“To commemorate the 3rd anniversary of the passage of the disability act, CCD will host a week-long event aimed at creating awareness on the successes achieved since the passage of the Act.

“And to stock take on efforts of stakeholders towards ensuring the full implementation of the Disability Rights Act, as well as to evaluate the extent of the performance of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities in the discharge of its responsibilities for the education, healthcare and the protection of PWDs’ Social, Economic, Civil Rights and other related matters,” he said.

Anyaele said that the organisation would be engaging the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Yakub Mohamed, the Executive Secretary of the Disability Commission, Mr James Lalu and other relevant stakeholders.
This, he said, was to broaden discussions and proffer solutions to issues that affects the no fewer than 25 million persons with disability across the country, especially on issues of PWDs’ participation in the electoral process..

 He also said that various opinion leaders within the disability community, line Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), International Development Partners, organized private sector, civil society organisations, and the media would also be invited to participate.

CCD is the premier organization of, and for persons with disabilities that works to promote disability rights, independent living, inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities in the development agenda.(NAN)
