New Electoral Act will deepen democracy – NYCN

The  National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has described the new Electoral Act as a ‘plus for democracy’ in the country.

NYCN Chairman in Imo, Mr Ezinwanne Udoka, who stated this at a news conference in Owerri on Monday, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the bill into law on Friday.

Udoka described the President’s decision to sign the bill as “well-informed, timely and democratic,’’ adding that the new Act would empower INEC to conduct free, credible and peaceful elections.

He also said that the new amended Act would spur politicians to uphold democratic tenets and rule of law.

“We are convinced that the Electoral Bill assented to  by President Muhammadu Buhari is a right step in the right direction, a decision well informed and a plus to Nigeria’s democracy.

“We commend the Presidency and the National Assembly for taking the bull by the horn to overhaul the electoral system to suit the people and restore confidence in the country’s electoral system,’’ he said.

Udoka said that the Act captured praiseworthy provisions that could revolutionise elections in the country through introduction of technological innovations to guarantee the constitutional rights of citizens to vote.

He promised that Imo youths would continue to work with government and other relevant bodies to strengthen democracy, leadership, and peace and security. (NAN)
