A civil society group,Voters Assembly,VOTAS led by Comrade Moshood Erubami has cast fresh doubts over the motive behind the sudden decision by President Goodluck Jonathan to convoke a national conference. Erubami who is president general of VOTAS said in a statement today, “It is wrong politics being played by the president who is just waking up to the efficacy of the National Conference as a potent solution to Nigeria problem, if not, why are these coincidentals coming when we are approaching the election year? It is a grand plan by the presidency to weaken the states and Nigerians from being strongly active , so as to pave the way for wholesale victory in 2015 either through election rigging or tenure elongation. It is too late in the day to start projects that are set at projecting an extinguishing image of a failing government when the voters are determined to change the status quo order to bring about qualitative change in governance and in the lives of Nigerian electorate.

VOTAS said “Ordinarily, the decision of President Jonathan to accept and setting up of a planning committee for the convocation of a National congress sounds good, but coming at this time in the tenure of the President makes it looks suspicious. It looks like a strategic action to distract the opposition from being focussed on the important job of displacing and replacing from government of the president and his party from governing this country any further. The President and his party the PDP are convinced that they can not survive the ongoing imbroglio from the new PDP and the onslaught from the opposition parties especially from the All Progreesive Congress (APC), hence the tactics of using the veiled convocation of a National Conference as a strategy of resolving the crisis and making the party newly relevant with the people especially since the President has come to realize that not a few Nigeria want the Sovereign National Conference as a medium for providing answers to the growing national questions. It is a master political stroke that would bring the Okuronmu faction of the Yoruba groupings back into relevance against the APC in which at the end of the day the Yoruba voice will be said to be dominant among those who will be praising the President for doing right things and things rightly when indeed nothing is changing.

The group added that “The choice of Dr Okuronmu is the first wrong step as a former SNC advocate to plan the conference his choice is unacceptable as picking him to do such important national job sends a strong signal that Nigeria cannot get the conference that they are stridently clamouring for, the Sovereign National Conference and not just any conference like the Obasanjos political conference which cannot take the country out of her self inflicted national malaise. The Conference must be sovereign and its proceedings must not be subjected to the tinkering of any other committee. Whatever must have been deliberated and decided upon at such conference must be final and can only be finally adopted by a referendum of the people. The committee to be seen to be serious about the conference must make it clear from the begining that what they are organizing is a Sovereign National conference that would decide once and for all the faith of this country , a conference that would put the destiny of Nigeria in the hands of Nigerians and recognizing their sovereignty as a people from who political office holders would be deriving their powers and authority

To us in the Voters Assembly, it is a dishonest and wrongly timed tenure elongation agenda being robed as a conference to halt the progressive movement to seize power from the current political hawks masqurading as politicians who are bent on capturing political
power for another four years through the back door.

Out of a 4 year tenure, government only utilize the first two years to serve the people, the third year is historically used to settle attendant rifts among party members , just as between the old and the new PDP, the remaining three months of October, November and December 2013 will be set aside for that while the last year in 2014 will be used to face election campain, election competition while engaging the opposition squarely.
If a Natioanal conference is now being planned in the last quarter of the third year , when will the conference proper take place ? shall we not be forced into shifting elections from 2014 and advertently play into the tenure elongation strategy in of the PDP in 2015?

Ordinarily, the decision of President Jonathan to accept and setting up of a planning committee for the convocation of a National congress sounds good, but coming at this time in the tenure of the President makes it looks suspicious. It looks like a strategic action to distract the opposition from being focussed on the important job of displacing and replacing from government of the president and his party from governing this country any further. We do not think that some of the policies being thrown out in recent times by the president are well meant, we suspect these policies are coming from the lists of strategies to win elections in 2015, having failed woefully to convince the electorate that it has performed well and justify the spending of the huge resources that it has consigned into private pockets of its collaborators from the monthly allocations accruing to them in the last 14 years of unrehearsed governance.
It is not by accident that the president just woke up to the reality of the consequences of shortfall in revenue yielding into the purse of the nation but it a purposeful design to deliberately withold state revenus which statutorily should be paid on monthly basis to the states.

The inability of the federal government to pay the last three months of revenue allocation to states is another strategy to drag back some of the progressive states known to have Committed Money Into Development projects and welfare of their people, so that in the end pausity of funds will impact negatively on their projects, bringing them to the level of non-performance like the federal government and take them out of peoples favour.

It is wrong politics being played by the president who is just waking up to the efficacy of the National Conference as a potent solution to Nigeria problem, if not, why are these coincidentals coming when we are approaching the election year? It is a grand plan by the presidency to weaken the states and Nigerians from being strongly active , so as to pave the way for wholesale victory in 2015 either through election rigging or tenure elongation.
