Mr Felix Nwadioha, Zonal Manager of the South-East office of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), retired from service on Wednesday, after 35 years in the agency.
Nwadioha, who retired as a Deputy Editor-in-Chief, joined the agency in 1983, and served in various states and Abuja before his deployment to manage the zonal office.
The retired editor, a lawyer, while thanking his former colleagues for organising a send-off party in his honour, urged them to raise the stakes in order to relevant in the media world..
He advised NAN workers to make more sacrifices so as to maintain’s the agency’s enviable place as the most credible news source in Nigeria, and attributed his success as manager to the cooperation of the workers.
Nwadioha described the Nigerian situation as “challenging”, but expressed optimism that NAN had the manpower to overcome every challenge.
He said that the media space was becoming tough, adding that only outfits ready to go the extra mile would succeed.
The manager thanked NAN’s management for the opportunity to preside over the zone, and encouraged those still in service to keep the flag flying.
In a goodwill message, the South-East Bureau Chief of The Sun, Mr Magnus Eze, described the celebrator as “a consummate journalist who discharged his duties without fear or favour”.
Eze said that retirement from active service was worth celebrating, especially when one had a fulfilled career.
He said that it was not easy to start and finish one’s career well, adding that it was also necessary for civil servants to arm themselves with other requisite skills that could inure even after retirement.
The acting Zonal Manager, Mrs. Maureen Atuonwu, in her remarks, described Nwadioha as a mentor, who brought sanity in the zone and made sure that every staff had a sense of belonging.
Atuonwu thanked the celebrator for his tutelage to up-and-coming reporters, as well as his contributions to the advancement of the agency.
