Retiring Chief of Defence Staff,Admiral Ola Saad Ibrahim has urged the military to strengthen democracy ,not to undermine it.Ibrahim said this at the pulling out parade for him on Friday in Abuja
In his words, “let me reiterate here that the role of the Nigerian Armed Forces is essentially to deepen our democracy and not to undermine it. In doing this, I urge you to always work in concert to defend democracy and our territorial integrity as no single Service can go it alone. The Armed Forces must continue to take training seriously to enable it adjust to both local and international challenges as they evolve.
He also commended the efforts of President Goodluck Jonathan in the fight against terror.
“ I am delighted that the measures taken by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and the commitment of our officers and men has yielded the tremendous progress recorded in the ongoing fight against terror in particular. I salute the resilience and doggedness of members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies in the face of all these challenges. I therefore wish to dedicate the successes and achievements to the entire military and other security agencies.
His successor ,Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh also said the armed forces will continue to tap from Ibrahim’s wealth of experience Badeh who spoke at a sent forth dinner on Thursday for retiring CDS in Abuja said “Let me use this opportunity to assure our retiring CDS, that the Armed Forces of Nigeria, will not only sustain this legacy but we shall also be leaning heavily on his immense knowledge and experience, to chart the ways forward. For those of us still in Service, here is a sterling example of service with dignity, professionalism and humility, combined with uncommon personal values worthy of emulation by those who cherish these good qualities. I am proud to inform this gathering that Admiral Ibrahim is leaving behind many indelible marks on the many seas through which he has voyaged.
“On a personal note, I wish to place on record my sincere appreciation for the cooperation and guidance I received from him at various stages in my career especially when I had the privilege of being at the helm of affairs in the Nigerian Air Force”Badeh said.
