Information Minister, Mr Labaran Maku has chided politicians from the North East that he accused of creating insecurity in the region. He accused them of turning around to blame President Goodluck Jonathan after their violent local politics has given rise the the scourge.Maku who is also acting minister of defence said derogatorily though politicians created the insecurity, “today they are now progressives” .
He said when the federal government wanted to intervene militarily much earlier, the politicians kicked against it ,that is why it took about two years for the president to send in soldiers in a state of emergency.According to the minister, the insecurity is not religious but the after-effect of violent local politics. He pledged that the federal government would take all necessary steps to keep Nigeria united.
The information minister made these observations during his last World Press Conference for 2013.He also accused politicians of failing to acknowledge the successes recorded by President Goodluck Jonathan just because of their political ambitions.
Maku said Jonathan has recorded great strides in the economy with the GDP at an appreciable level of between 6.8 % and 7%.He said inflation has also been reduced to about 8% just as the administration has stabilized the exchange rate between N155 and N160 to the Dollar. The minister said Nigeria’s foreign reserves have grown from $33 billion to $$48billion.
He said though the nation has sadly witnessed tragedies in the aviation sector, this administration has made more progress in the aviation sector. He also listed what he called the tangible road projects, power sector reforms ,transformation of railways and successes in the agricultural sector as the feats recorded by the Jonathan administration.
