There is no doubt that these are hard times for the PDP in Kaduna state. For now it seems two irreconcilable factions, with daggers drawn against each other, have openly drawn the battle lines. Both sides are spitting fire and strategizing for a final show down. The situation is almost like the national hiatus which has torn the party along the “original” and “new” PDP.There is the “old guard” and “new guard”. The former is still led by Dr. Abubakar Gaiya Haruna, as state chairman and are loyal to the Vice President Alhaji Mohammed Sambo.
The other faction is said to be close to former governor, Sen.Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi. The Yaro Makama faction is operating under the auspices of PDP Save Kaduna Group and penultimate week it formally announced its allegiance to the Kawu Baraje led faction .It declared that a surgical operation and leadership was not only desirable “but absolutely necessary”. The faction led by Makama and others, said in a paid advertisement, “the impunity and total lack of regard for not only the grassroots members… but its founding fathers and leaders… has led to a progressive shrinking of the party’s support base across the state. It also believed that, “the fortunes of the party began a spiralling nose dive since 2007, and the relief after the 2011 elections was short-lived and we are back to the days of the locusts.“Nothing positive is happening. Governance is at a standstill; we have a government that is seemingly on auto pilot and whenever the pilot remembers that he is supposed to be steering a ship, he begs for navigation and other aids from somewhere else”.
According to the faction, “We, therefore, wish to proudly identify with, and pledge our unalloyed loyalty and support to the new leadership of the party under Alhaji Abubakar kawu Baraje.
“We also salute the courage and conviction exhibited by our former vice president, and a founder of the party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Govs Rabiu Kwankwaso, Sule Lamido, Murtala Nyako, Babangida Aliyu, Aliyu Wammako, Rotimi Amaechi and Abdul Fatah Ahmed for standing up to be counted as those who have rescued our dear party from an otherwise certain death”.
The leadership of the faction has Ambassador Sule Buba as Deputy Chairman, Bar. Gideon Morik- Secretary, Hon. Isaac Bodams- Organizing Secretary, Alhaji Usman Danbaba- publicity Secretary, Hon. Awwal Aliyu Tafoki- coordinator, Youths and women, Hajiya Aisha Mairago.
On the other hand, the faction led by Dr. A. G. Haruna said in a recent statement that the Makama group was “…seeking for cheap relevance by declaring loyalty to illegal and outlawed faction of the
party led by Alhaji Kawu Baraje and his co- travelers”.
The faction’s public Relation officer, Bar Ibrahim Mansour, said the new group is made up of political opportunists and ”…is completely on a derailed path as the Kaduna State Chapter remains solidly behind the leadership of our National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur”.
In the statement, Mansour added, “The PDP in Kaduna State remains undivided and one big family… Makama and his ilk are known self- centered politicians who are bent on discrediting Vice President
Mohammed Namadi Sambo over their insatiable quest for patronage and accumulation of wealth”.
In an open threat to the faction, the PRO added that, “Any attempt at creating confusion by political jobbers under the guise of dirty politics will surely attract the attention of law enforcement
“We reject the negative ploy by Makama and a handful of ‘food is ready’ politicians in his camp aimed at creating confusion in the party”.
“Makama must be reminded that there is time for everything; he cannot remain chairman of PDP forever. It is his turn to follow others just like he was followed during his time”.
Barr. Mansour was also on air accusing, “rebelling” members of the party,Makama group inclusive. Speaking in a political programme on Kaduna State Media Corporation, KSMC, he described, specifically Alhaji Makama and Ambassador Sule Buba as “ingrates”.
Mansour claimed that Morik, Makama, Ambassador Sule and others were beneficiaries of”…PDP largesse and goodwill and cannot now come back to bite the finger that fed them”. He said if they have a grouse with the way things… are going there are (PDP) constitutional provisions to channel such grievances”.
Last week, there was cheering news amongst party members when Chairman of Governor Muktar Supporters group, Alhaji Salisu Aliyu Dan Shehu told newsmen in Kaduna that consultations were already on-going to resolve the differences between relevant stakeholders. He said under an initiative of Governor Muktar Ramallan Yero supporters and elders of the party were at work to bring the crisis to an early end. Alhaji Dan Shehu noted that the situation in the state’s chapter of the party was not something unusual because people hold differing opinions on issues.
According to him, with the support of the Vice President ,Arc. Mohammed Namadi Sambo, stakeholders have stepped up contacts and consultations towards early resolution of their differences. Alhaji Dan Shehu appealed to PDP supporters, especially the youths, to close ranks and work together towards building a stronger party and developing the state. According to him, the peace being enjoyed in the state was as a result of cooperation and diligence of the people and the good policies of the Muktar administration.
