A progressive youth group has declared that the All Progressive Congress APC has demonstrated a”great affinity with the plight of Nigerian youths”by mainstreaming a number of our youth. Dominic Alancha, who spoke for Patriotic and Progressive Youths in Abuja at the weekend said “ This Press Conference was organized to intimate Nigerians and the whole world on the outcome of engagement by Patriotic and Progressive Nigerian Youths with the All Progressive Congress (APC) merger process. This is particularly crucial given concerns raised in our earlier press briefing on the challenges faced by young people in mainstreaming youth issues within the legal framework and statutory processes of Nigerian Political Parties. Today, we can tell our compatriots that the APC has demonstrated great affinity with the plight of Nigerian youths by mainstreaming a number of our youth specific and general demands in its constitution and manifesto.
Some of the gains so far made according to Alancha include “youth specific issues” and “national issues”.The youth specific issues include removal of age ceiling for the membership of the APC Board of Trustees;expansion to include youth representatives in the APC leadership structure at the Level of National Caucus;expansion to include youth representatives in APC leadership structures at zonal, state and local government level;at zonal level, a youth leader from each of the six geo-political zones;inclusion of Party Leadership at Polling Unit Level with the inclusion of youth mobilizers. This is aimed at encouraging increased participation of young people in the political process, build the capacity of party agents and minimize election malpractices; Article 20 of the APC Constitution qualified consensus candidates to be duly valid “provided that where a candidate has emerged by consensus for an elective position, a vote of yes or no should be called to ensure that it was not an imposition which could breed discontent and crisis. This huge leap in internal party democracy obtains at all levels of APC party primaries and prioritization of Youth Employment and Social Welfare as cardinal objectives of the APC. In this regard, the APC has promised to establish youth focused development banks in different sectors of the economy. The APC Manifesto also offers innovative rural agricultural initiatives aimed at stimulating youth entrepreneurship and minimizing youth unemployment in Nigeria.
The national issues include firm resolve to undertake far reaching electoral reform especially through sincere implementation of Justice Uwais Electoral Reform Report;genuine war against corruption by ensuring the independence of anti-graft agencies such as the EFCC and ICPC and setting up of special courts to try corrupt persons;generation of 40, 000 megawatts of electricity in the first 8 years in government, a critical asset needed to power the potentials of Nigerians especially the youths and specific growth marked with benchmarks in education, health, human capital development, infrastructure, manufacturing, housing, agriculture, environment and extractive industry.
He described the movement as “ a group of Young, Patriotic and Progressive Nigerians who are concerned about the continuous drifting of the ship of the Nigerian state to perdition especially as marked by escalating youth and general unemployment, youth and general poverty, alarming insecurity and general developmental deficits. We are also concerned about the continuous relegation of Nigerian youths from leadership processes in Nigeria. We are perturbed by the unfortunate stereotype of young people in Nigeria as hewers of electoral malfeasance and drawers of election violence. Being democrats, we are committed to political CHANGE come 2015 and in subsequent elections. We are committed to mobilizing Nigerian youths all over the world for CHANGE – CHANGE that will deliver the Nigeria of our collective dream.
“While we continue to push for the mainstreaming of a few other youth concerns, we urge other political parties to mainstream youth issues in their party processes. This is crucial as the era of deployment of the frustrations of Nigerian youths for cheap political ends is over. Having realized that we bear the greatest burden of the current comatose that our dear country has become, Nigerian youths are more committed than ever to the task of rescuing our fatherland from the precipice. The manifesto of the APC has already provided a clear road map on this rescue mission. With the APC Youth Charter, Nigerian youths will ensure that the APC delivers on its promises to Nigerians. On this wave of optimism, we urge Nigerian youths all over the world to identify with the wind of Change that the APC symbolizes. With the coming together of major opposition political parties, the arduous task of recovering citizenry dignity and our national pride from the gutters of bad governance of the past 13 years has just begun!
He added “While we look forward to the official public presentation of the publication on our engagement with the APC merger process and the APC Youth Charter, we enjoin every Nigerian youth to identify with this massive train of change, development, national renaissance and economic prosperity.
“This is a new dawn for Nigeria! All Patriotic and Progressive Nigerian Youths are welcome on board!
