Governors resurrect missing $49.8billion affair, slam cancelled NEC meetings

Rotimi-Amaechi 600The controversy the missing $49.8billion oil money may not have been resolved after all, going by the alarm raised by Governor Rotimi Amaechi led Nigeria Governor’s Forum. After a late night meeting Wednesday, the NGF said in a communiqué read by Amaechi that “The Forum reiterates that the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation and the Minister of Finance are obliged to brief the governors formally on the non-remittance of $49.8bllion into the Federation Account. In the absence of the National Economic Council meeting, the platform for resolving this issue becomes non existent.”
Allegations of a missing $49.8billion oil money was reportedly part of a letter written by Central Bank of Nigeria,CBN Governor to Sanusi Lamido Sanus to President Goodluck Jonathan. After the letter was leaked to the media, stake holders in Jonathan’s economic teal rallied round and held a meeting where they announced that the issues had been resolved. They said only $10billion was yet to be fully accounted for.But with today’s assertion by NGF ,it appears the last may not have been hear of the money.
The governors also said “As co-managers of Nigeria’s economy the Forum expresses deep disappointment at yet another postponement of The National Economic Council meeting.
“The Forum is concerned that a pattern is emerging where the National Econmic Council meeting has been postponed for five consecutive months. It has become disturbing that governors are invited to Abuja for National Economic Council Meeting only to be told of its cancellation, usually on the eve of the meeting, after the arrival of the governors without any reason.Yet there are issues of urgent national importance that ought to have been addressed at the National Economic Council meeting.
“Consequently, we have a 2014 national budget without input from the states ,resulting to a lack of sense of ownership of the budget process” Amaechi said .
He added that “The Forum notes again with concern, the developments in Rivers State. And in the light of the controversy concerning the redeployment of the police, the president is enjoined to call for a meeting of the police Council to discuss this and other related issues”.
