Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has reacted to his triumph over ex Governor Celestine Omehia at the Supreme Court on Friday.
Amaechi who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary,Mr David Iyofor said “Today’s judgment once again shows that God is with us. As God has given us the opportunity to oversee the affairs of Rivers State, we will continue to do so diligently and tirelessly to better the lives of our people and develop the state.
The governor pledged to “rededicate and focus more on administering good governance to the people of the state and ensure that our people continue to enjoy the dividends of democracy.”
Newsdiaryonline sources had said that the apex court verdict was awaited with anxiety on both sides.Tension over the apex court ruling heightened because the court alternative suddenly became one of the means through which Abuja forces chose to seek the governor’s ouster.
Some insiders were hower not surprised at the governor’s triumph at the apex court. They point to a few events in recent times which may indicate that some peace moves may have been going secretly.
Some of the outcomes of the seeming secret moves include the sudden provision of police protection for a rally Amaechi attended in Ogoniland recently. It was quite instructive.
Later reports emerged that the combative Commissioner of Police Joesph Mbu was on his way out of Rivers State .The police Service Commission, and the Inspector General of Police M.Abubakar in their separate press statements on Thursday finally listed Mbu among CPs redeployed.Mbu was moved to Abuja.
And the apex court ruling was just like the icing on the cake for the governor.
The aof the Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP said in a statement today that its attention “has been drawn to statements credited to officials of the Rivers State Government, that Rotimi Amaechi defeated the PDP in the Supreme Court judgment yesterday, Friday February 7, 2014.
“The PDP wishes to state that the matter was between the former Governor of Rivers State, Sir Celestine Omehia and Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
Jerry Needam spokesman for the state’s chairman of the party said in a statement “ the PDP was not at any time a party in the matter and could not have been defeated by Governor Rotimi Amaechi, as erroneously peddled by confused and mischievous agents of Rotimi Amaechi”.
“That the PDP is aware that the matter of tenure reduction against Governor Rotimi Amaechi is still pending at the Court of Appeal, Abuja, therefore, it is not yet hurrah as they are making unsuspecting and gullible Rivers people to believe.”
