The Vice President and Chairman of the National Council on Privatisation (NCP), Arc Mohammed Namadi Sambo, has stated that the participation of the private sector in the electric power sector reform programme would bring about higher generation capacities through the provision of more efficient and cost effective power stations and improvements in electric power distribution, transmission networks, billing& collection.
He made this known on Saturday at the physical handover of Ughelli Power Plc to the core investor, Trans National Corporation of Nigeria (Transcorp Plc) in Ughelli, Delta State.
Represented by the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka N. Wogu, he pledged the Federal Government’s commitment to creating the enabling environment that will
encourage private sector investors to take on challenges therein to ensure quality and cost effective service delivery to the Nigerian electricity consumers.
In his address, the Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel E. Uduaghan, noted that the handover of Ughelli Power Plc was the greatest thing that had happened to Delta State in recent history.
He promised the State Government’s support to ensure that the plant is quickly turned around.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Transcorp Nigeria Plc, Tony O. Elumelu, revealed that the capacity of the company will be raised from its current 900mw to 1,500mw in three years.
He further pointed out that Transcorp Ughelli Power Plc had huge plans for the host communities in terms of corporate social responsibility, among which are the establishment of a football academy to be managed by one of the leading European soccer training institutes; an integrated petrochemical plant, healthcare facilities and the provision of street lights.
Receiving the Certificate of Handover from the representative of Vice President, Elumelu promised that there will be light in Nigeria and Transcorp Ughelli Power Plc will play a significant role in making that a reality.
In his welcome address, the outgoing Chief Executive Officer of the Company, Engr.
Paul I. Umunna, disclosed that the company is the most reliable black start power plant in Nigeria, as the entire nation relies on it to initiate power supply to the national grid network whenever there was loss of power due to system collapse or failure.
He congratulated Transcorp Ughelli Power Plc, the Bureau of Public Enterprises and other
agencies for making the privatization and handover activities a reality for Ughelli Power Plant.
Presenting the vote of thanks, the Chairman of the Transition Committee of the plant, Chigbo Anichebe, thanked the President for his support on the long road to privatization of the sector which is adjudged the most transparent in the history of privatization in Nigeria.
He thanked the Minister of Labour and Productivity, the host communities, the workers of the company, the investor, and the members of the Transition Board for making the handover a reality.(Breaking News,power reforms,Nigerian News)
